Offered here is Ben Hogan's actual early-career MacGregor "Personal Model" sand iron. Ben Hogan, of course, started his own golf club company in 1954, so we know that this MacGregor club was made for Ben Hogan some time before then.

It is without question that Ben Hogan's "Personal Model" MacGregor irons are considered Holy Grails of the golf club collecting world. There are only 3 such confirmed sets that have ever been reported publicly, including the USGA set, the set at Merion Golf Club, and the 1953 irons that we sold in 2021 for nearly $250,000. While we cannot speak with authority on the Merion set, both the USGA set and the 1953 set are missing a Sand Iron. Golf Club historian and author Jeff Ellis has previously stated that Ben Hogan's sand iron offered in this auction is one of only 2 such Ben Hogan Personal Model sand irons that are known to exist.

This MacGregor Ben Hogan "Personal Model" sand iron is in very good condition, and shows actual use consistent with a sand iron from that era. The grip is not a typical MacGregor grip, but is instead a Pro Only Cord-Line grip. Sure enough, that grip was a favorite of Ben Hogan's, and there is an unmistakable photo showing Ben Hogan using this exact style of grip in the Masters Tournament. This Ben Hogan sand iron was also featured in a recent Golf Heritage Society Bulletin where celebrated clubmaker Bobby Grace described the offered club as "priceless."
