Doug Ford's Replica PGA Championship
Trophy
The PGA Championship's Wannamaker trophy has been presented to the winner of the
PGA Championship each year with one caveat - if you win it, you can't keep it.
Some former Champions have received a replica Wanamaker Trophy (see Lot
2, Al Geiberger's Trophy from 1966), but many of the older Champions were never
presented with one at all. Doug Ford is one such PGA Champion; he was never
awarded a trophy for winning the 1955 PGA Championship.
Vjay Singh was well aware of this
problem, and at the 1999 PGA Championship Champions Dinner, as reigning
champion, he presented each former PGA Champion with their own replica PGA
Championship Trophy. The championship that each member of this exclusive club
had strived so hard to achieve was finally memorialized in a trophy to keep
forever.
Presented here is one of those
replica PGA Championship trophies that Vijay Singh so graciously bestowed upon
his fellow champions. This trophy was presented to 1955 PGA Championship winner
Doug Ford, as is stated on the plaque adorning the front of the trophy. The
entire trophy, including base, stands approximately 14" tall and 7" wide. The
miniature Wannamaker Trophy stands almost 6" tall and is beautifully inscribed
"Annual Championship of the Professional Golfers Association of America." The
plastic case covering the miniature Wannamaker replica is cracked, but could
easily be replaced for few dollars at a local hobby or trophy shop.
As if this trophy could get any more spectacular, this exact trophy was part of
Doug Ford's Hall of Fame Induction exhibit in 2011. As you can see in the photo
below, it was prominently placed in Doug Ford's Hall of Fame Induction display
alongside his Masters Tournament Green Jacket.
This amazing trophy comes with
a Letter of Authenticity from Doug Ford himself.
