Historically Significant 1933 Augusta
National
Membership Invitation from Bobby Jones,
Membership Card & Used 1933 Scorecard
There is a great deal going on with this lot, so we'll try to break up the
description between the 3 historic pieces to make up this historic piece: (1) an
original 1933 letter from Bobby Jones offering membership to his newly-formed
Augusta National Golf Club; (2) a scarce original "Guest Card" entitling the
bearer to membership at Augusta National; and (3) one of the earliest-known used
Augusta National scorecards in existence.
(1) 1933 Letter from Bobby Jones
This is unquestionably the finest Bobby Jones letter that we have ever
offered. It is virtually unimprovable in terms of golf content (Bobby Jones
himself is offering to let someone to become an original Augusta National
Member!) and signature (JSA has authenticated and rated this Bobby Jones
signature a 9/10, and we agree)
(2) Scarce Original "Guest Card" entitling Bearer to Membership at Augusta
National
This is the 3rd time we've encountered one of these scarce original Augusta
National Guest Cards - and the only time it has been accompanied by a matching
letter from Bobby Jones. On the two previous occasions, the Guest Card alone
sold for close to $10,000.
(3) Actual Used 1933 Augusta National scorecard
This is the original scorecard from the prospective Augusta National member's
trial round of golf at Augusta National, when he played 9 holes with Head Pro Ed
Dudley. Keep in mind that the first tee shot was struck at Augusta National when
it opened for business on January 1, 1933. In the offered October 1933 letter,
Bobby Jones refers to the prospective member's trial round at Augusta National
"last winter". Therefore, Jones was undoubtedly referring to the earliest month
or two of the 1933 year - meaning this is likely one of the earliest - if not
the earliest - used Augusta National scorecard that still exists.
This lot is the unique opportunity to obtain these 3 original Augusta National
Membership documents together. It's one thing for someone to save their
correspondence from the great Bobby Jones, but to also save the Guest Card and
even the original scorecard from their initial round at the not-yet-famous
Augusta National? This is almost certainly the only collection of these 3
matching items anyone in the world.
Condition: The
Letter, Guest Pass and Scorecard have each been mounted on a scrapbook page, but
are in otherwise very good condition.

**UPDATE 8/27/13** We previously neglected to
mention another important aspect of this collection. The used 1933 Augusta
National scorecard is the first ANGC scorecard ever issued - before the 9
holes were reversed after the 1934 Masters Tournment to the order that remains
today. This is surely one of the only such examples of this reversed-9 scorecard
that still exists today.
