Bobby Jones Autographed Baseball
(Only Known to Exist)
Offered here is one of the rarest pieces of Bobby Jones "Americana" that we have
ever offered. Bobby Jones was unquestionably one of the most famous athletes of
his day, perhaps surpassed in reverence (not to mention stature) by only Babe
Ruth. Today, high quality Babe Ruth signed baseballs sell for in excess of
$30,000-$50,000 - this despite the fact that Ruth was almost certainly the the
most prolific signer of his generation, if not history. Bobby Jones was quite
the opposite. Unlike Ruth, Bobby Jones frequently shunned the spotlight and even
gave it all up by retiring from golf at the age of 28 of practice law. Can you
imagine if Babe Ruth had done that?
Because of Jones' reluctance to make himself available to his fans, his
autographs are exceedingly rare in comparison to Babe Ruth. Only a handful of
known Bobby Jones signed golf balls are even know to exist - with one famously
selling for $55,800 in a Green Jacket Auctions April 2011 Golf Auction. But how
many autographed Bobby Jones baseballs exist? According to leading third-party
authenticator PSA/DNA, only ONE.
Offered here is the only-known Bobby Jones single-signed baseball. Everything
about this circa 1930's signed ball is exceptional - with a large, bold
autograph easily grading a 7+ and in which Jones adds the salutation "With Best
Wishes." It should be noted to Jones has also signed a Spalding model baseball
which, surely not so coincidentally, was also Jones' golf company and primary
source of income.
