Large-scale vintage photograph of the Strathmont Championship Cup from the first
U.S. Golf Club Championship at Elmira Country Club in Elmira, NY, 1898. Mounted
on board. Titled on board on recto in ink above image, "Strathmont Championship
Cup." Inscribed in ink below image: "Presented to Elmira Country Club by Hon.
and Mrs. Sloat Fassett, 1898. Club Championship Match Play." Photograph: 13 1/2
x 10 1/2 inches. Mount: 21 3/8 x 16 3/4 inches.
The Strathmont Championship in Elmira
NY is believed to the be the oldest continuously played golf club championship
in the U.S. The original course was built by Elmira businessman and politician
J. Sloat Fassett, who was introduced to the game during a visit to Scotland in
the 1890s.
Condition: Overall in very good condition. Photograph has a few minor scratches
on the surface. Board has 1 1/2 inch tear on top right edge, bumped right corner
and worn edges. Small rectangular label or plaque has been removed from bottom
center below the inscription.
