Horton Smith's Bobby Jones Wedge
Used to Win 1934/1936 Masters Tournament
This wedge was one of the most cherished possessions of the late Horton Smith -
his prized Masters Tournament-winning Bobby Jones model wedge.
While Horton Smith used this club for many many years, it was a particular
favorite for use at Augusta National, where the club's grooves would help shots
stick on Augusta's famously fast greens. In fact, according to family lore,
Horton would hand-grind the clubface's grooves, and that this was the first club
that allowed Horton to place backspin on his shots and have the ball pull
backwards once it hit the green - an extreme rarity in the
day.
Condition: This 34
1/2" wedge is in excellent condition with exceptional game use apparent on the
clubface. The sole of the wedge appears to be hand-ground to a smooth finish in
order to flatten its lie. The grip is not original and appears to have been
replaced in approximately the 1950s.
Letter of Provenance from Horton Smith's Family attesting to the fact that
Horton Smith used this wedge in multiple Masters Tournaments
including to win the Masters. The family did not place much emphasis into
exactly which of the two Masters Tournaments Horton Smith won with this club,
other than to state that it may have been both.
