Ben Hogan
1913 U.S. Amateur Contestants Badge
(Only Known Example!)
The term "rare" is often overused in collecting circles, but the offered piece
is as rare as it gets.
This original contestant's badge from
the 1913 U.S. Amateur is the only known example in the hobby. In fact, when
GilChrist's Guide to Golf Collectibles was produced in 2006, this contestant's
badge was listed as "NONE KNOWN".
1913, of course, was a magical year
in golf, with Francis Ouimet shocking the world at the Open that year. Everyone
knows that the 1913 U.S. Open was Francis Ouimet's first Major Championship that
he entered, and the 2nd was the 1913 U.S. Amateur a few weeks later.
While all eyes were on Ouimet, who
made it to the Round of 16, the Championship was won by the great Jerome
Travers.
This 100 year old contestant's badge
is in very good condition. The original pin on the reverse has gone missing, but
a suitable replacement has been added.
