Harry Vardon Signed

1906 Business Letterhead

The history of golf is filled with great players and champions, but only a handful have ever reached true legendary status. That list arguably only includes the likes of Old and Young Tom Morris, Harry Vardon, Bobby Jones, Jack Nicklaus and Tiger Woods. Harry Vardon was part of the so-called Great Triumvirate, along with James Braid and J.H. Taylor, that launched golf into its first Golden Age at the turn of the Century. His many accomplishments include winning the Open Championship 6 times and winning the 1900 U.S. Open. In addition to his many tournament victories, Harry Vardon is probably most-known for popularizing what became known as the "Vardon grip" - the overlapping grip that most golfers use today.

This handwritten and signed letter was written by Harry Vardon on his impressive personal letterhead in 1906. We've seen some later Harry Vardon letterheads which depict all 6 of his Open Medals, but this is a very early Vardon letterhead from his playing days. This letterhead only depicts 4 Open Medals and U.S. Open medal, as that's the number Vardon had won at the time of this letter in 1906 (he would go on to win the Open again in 1911 and 1914). All Harry Vardon autographs are difficult to obtain, since he passed away in 1937. But a letter of this quality can certainly be considered once-in-a-lifetime. This letter was created by Vardon as a receipt for "golf twine", and the entirety of the letter is written in Vardon's own hand.

The billhead has been backed with a plastic type laminate to protect the paper from tears. it is not laminated on the front however.

Vardon's autograph has been authenticated by Green Jacket Auctions and comes with our certificate, matching hologram, and has been added to our Authentication Database.
