Ben Hogan
1923 Bobby Jones 18th Hole Victory Putt
Winning His First Major Wire Photo
As you've no doubt seen by now, this Winter Golf
Auction by Green Jacket Auctions represents one of the greatest sales of golf
photographs in history. From Old Tom Morris & the origins of professional golf
to Bobby Jones & the founding of Augusta National, many of the offered
photographs are among the finest such examples in the hobby.
Offered here is a rare original
photograph from Bobby Jones' first Major Championship victory. This photograph
depicts Bobby Jones on the 18th green at the conclusion of the 1923 U.S. Open.
Well, I guess conclusion isn't the correct word, as Bobby Jones went on to miss
this putt! Rest assured, young Bobby returned the next day for an 18 hole
playoff against Bobby Cruickshank where he won his first Major.
This rare original 1923 photograph is
one which we've never seen before. It beautifully depicts a huge crowd watching
a young Bobby Jones. It's quite amazing to think that many in that impressive
gallery had likely never even heard of Bobby Jones at the time of this putt. But
within a few years, the entire world would know his name.
The condition of this large 8"x10"
photograph is very nice with a few tiny corner chips. Reverse has a full paper
caption and stamps from Acme and NEA.
