Great Northern Railway Menu
Featuring Bobby Jones on Cover
Offered here is a piece of Bobby Jones memorabilia that is so rare we don't
actually know much about it.
This menu provides an excellent case
study into the amateur status of Bobby Jones, as the menu was almost certainly
unauthorized; that is to say, it was never authorized by Bobby Jones. This is
due to two facts: (1) this menu almost certainly dates to Bobby Jones' playing
days - when endorsements were improper for any amateur, let alone the greatest
amateur of them all, and (2) this piece contains a facsimile "Bobby" Jones
signature - a name Jones himself detested and never signed as his signature. For
those reasons, it seems highly unlikely that Bobby Jones would've signed off on
this menu bearing his likeness.
So how was this menu produced? Well,
the menu rather prominently gives copyright credit to Underhill, who was one of
the most famous photographers of the day. Therefore, we can be fairly certain
that while Bobby Jones never signed off on this piece, the copyright holder for
the image upon which it is based apparently did.
This rare 1920's "Bobby" Jones piece
measures 7x 10 1/4" and is in very good condition.
