Bobby Jones Signed Spalding Golf Ball
The elusiveness of autographed golf balls by one of golf's all-time greats,
Bobby Jones, has long been a popular subject in the golf collecting hobby. After
years of searching by some of the top collectors in the hobby, in addition to
the press received by Green Jacket Auctions for our April 2011 sale of a Bobby
Jones signed golf ball for $55,865 (the highest price ever paid for a golf
autograph), we have now discovered exactly 7 authentic single-signed Bobby Jones
golf balls. Even allowing for the fact that a couple more examples may
eventually be discovered, that's it. Over 1000 baseballs are known of Jones'
contemporary Babe Ruth, but just a handful of signed golf balls of Bobby. Why?
Well, unfortunately, 1920's and '30's fountain pens were not conducive to
signing golf balls. And most of the golf balls that were painstakingly signed by
Bobby Jones with a fountain pen have completely faded over the years.
Offered here is an authentic Bobby
Jones signed golf ball, which has not only been authenticated by Green Jacket
Auctions, but also leading third party authenticator JSA. Fortunately, many
decades ago, the original owner of this ball put a layer of shellac over Jones'
autograph, which is likely the only reason why this fountain pen autograph still
exists today.
