Ben Hogan
1930's Walter Hagen & Olin Dutra
Endorsed Wooden Viewing Seat
This portable
wooded viewing seat from the 1930's "United States Golf Champions" provided
solid seating in an instant. The seat's one side features a hole used as a
handle and the impressed facsimile signatures of Walter Hagen and Olin Dutra
while the other side bears a paper piece picturing the two golf champions in
portrait. The seat measures 29 1/2" tall and 11" wide. Olin Dutra won the US Open in 1934, and the practice of the day was for the reigning Champ to do an exhibition tour to cash in on their fame and victory as the prize money for tournaments was not that great. Who better to pair up with the Walter Hagen, the ultimate showman. These seats were sold at these exhibitions, again some of the money going to the champ. The seat was sold through their tour. The USGA has one of these seats in their Walter Hagen exhibit. The device which comes
with a simple locking mechanism to ensure stability, exhibits moderate wear and
is in Excellent condition. The paper portraits may be a later replacement, but
we're not sure, as we've never seen this piece before.
