Circa 1800s Damask/Tapestry

Depicting Early 19th Century Golfer

A damask is similar to a tapestry except there are no embroidered threads. The cloth has the scene woven into it as opposed to added later through stitching. The image is a wonderful scene of a gentleman golfer teeing of with a long nose play club as his trusty caddie stands guard. Within the design is the motto Far and Sure, which is a slogan that is connected to the game of golf since the 1600s. There are some areas of damage from stitches as well as missing fringe, but overall it still display beautifully.

We have no way of knowing exactly how old this piece is, though it certainly seems to date to the 1800s. Measures approximately 14" square it is framed to a size of 21" x 21.5"
