Vintage Golf Walking Stick/Sunday
Stick
In the 1800s and early 1900s, golf themed walking sticks were extremely
popular. These walking sticks were also called Sunday sticks or Sabbath
sticks, and were supposedly the golf enthusiasts' answer to the Church of
Scotland discouraging golf on Sundays. So essentially, these Sabbath sticks
were golf clubs were disguised as walking sticks: the club head comfortably
fitting in the palm of the golfer's hand, until feeling unobserved, the
stick was reversed and a few strokes were played.
This is a beautifully crafted late
1800s or very early 1900s walking stick. It measures 33 1/2", and the
clubhead has a lead backweight, horn or fiber, and crosshatch face scoring.
