Extremely Rare Set
of Spalding Wood Shafted
Bobby Jones Irons
In the early 1930s, Spalding had signed Bobby Jones for the rights to produce clubs bearing his name. The clubs were some of the first made with the new steel shafts. In 1934, after several of Jones' friends had requested to have a set of these clubs with wooden shafts, Jones asked Spalding to produce a limited number of sets will wooden shafts for his friends and others. In recent years, a small number of these sets have appeared for sale with the wooden shafts with matching serial numbers and in various states of condition.
These sets were all made for male players.
The set offered here is a rather unique set stamped and designed for women, with each blade stamped with an "L". The set consists irons from #1 thru #9, as well as a matching Calamity Jane Putter, also stamped with an L. The original owner of this rare set also added an almost unused Walter Hagen Concave Sand Iron, also designed specifically for a woman. Curiously, this was the same wedge that Jones himself has in his bag during his 1930 Grand Slam, but which had been banned in January 1931.
So why was the woman who originally owned this set re-creating Jones’ clubs from his 1930 Grand Slam? That we’ll likely never know.
But what we do know is how rare these clubs are. This set of Bobby Jones Ladies Irons are in extremely good and original condition, with all original shafts and grips. This is also true for the Calamity Jane and the Walter Hagen Sand Iron as well. It is unknown just how many sets of these rare irons were made for women, but there could have not been many, as all of the matching sets sold prior to this auction have been men’s models. This is a unique opportunity to say the least.
