Early 1800's
"Dutch Golf Girl"
Stained Glass Window

Early stained glass windows with golfing subjects are rarely offered for sale and few are as early as this one. While dated “1595” on the glass, that is a reference to the date of the original painting upon which this stained glass is based. This stained and leaded glass window more accurately dates from the early 1800s, or possibly even earlier.

A remarkably well-crafted item, it is lead-lined and shows the image of a young Dutch or Flemish girl holding a golf (or kolf) club and stitched leather ball. This image was originally painted by the artist Adriaen Van Der Linde. This piece was originally purchased at a Glasgow Antiques sale as part of the estate of Dr. David Ross, a prominent Scottish collector of non-golfing antiquities. Ross reputedly purchased it during an antique buying trip in Holland in the 1970s.

That’s about all we know on the provenance of this piece – other than the fact that stained glass experts identify it as early 1800s or prior.

Not surprisingly for its age, it contains a number of hairline cracks in the glass which while of concern, does not detract from its huge appeal. Presented in original and unrestored condition, it would certainly benefit greatly from the addition of a frame and gentle clean.

A truly wonderful and historic item.
