Rare Harry Vardon
1900 U.S. Tour Photograph
Though Francis Ouimet's 1913 U.S.
Open victory is given the most credit for growing golf in America, Harry
Vardon's U.S. Tour in 1900 cannot be forgotten. The great Vardon's 1900 U.S.
Tour was one of the most important events in American golf history; in fact,
a 7 year old Francis Ouimet attended one of Vardon's events at a sporting
goods store during that tour. Little did anyone know that thirteen years
later the young Ouimet would defeat the great Vardon and catapult golf into
the American mainstream.
This is an original photograph of
Harry Vardon on that historic 1900 U.S. Tour. This photo depicts Vardon in a
match against Alexander Findlay at Poland Spring, Maine on Aug 13, 1900. In
this photo, Findlay can be seen putting as Vardon looks on from the right in
a white shirt. Vardon won the match by 7 holes up.
Original action photographs of Harry
Vardon playing golf during his playing days are hard to find. But the
offered example from America was taken while Vardon was only a few weeks
removed from winning the 1900 U.S. Open and while Vardon was a 3-time
British Open Champ (Vardon would go on to win 3 more).
The photo itself measures 9 1/2" x 7
1/2". It is mounted to 11" x 14".
