Mike Souchak's
1962 US Open Contestant Badge
Unlike his older brother Frank, who played professional football and amateur golf, Mike Souchak played football only through college at Duke, but made his mark in the professional ranks of golf, winning 15 times on the PGA Tour and competing in two Ryder Cups. Mike Souchak would come up short of winning a major championship, but played well nonetheless, tallying 11 top-ten major finishes.
Presented here is an item from one of the Majors in which Souchak competed, his 1962 U.S. Open Contestant Badge. Contestant's Badges from Major Championships have long been sought after by collectors and this one should be no exception. The ’62 Open was contested at Oakmont and the outcome of the tournament could not have been more dramatic, as a young Jack Nicklaus defeated The King – Arnold Palmer in an 18-hole playoff, establishing one of golf’s greatest rivalries for years to come.
