Jess Sweetser's 1932 Walker Cup Medal
from The Country Club at Brookline

A stockbroker and aerospace executive by trade, Jess Sweetser amassed one of the greatest amateur golf careers in history.  Sweetser was an NCAA Individual Champion while at Yale, a 2-time Metropolitan Amateur Champion, a U.S. Amateur Champion and the first American born player to win the British Amateur.  In addition, Sweetser played an integral part in early Walker Cup history, having played in six installments and being named captain for two more.

Here is a great link to the 1932 Walker Cup – Jess Sweetser’s Engraved Gold Medal.  The Medal measures 7/8” in diameter and has the host site logo (Country Club at Brookline) on front, with raised letters on back reading, “Walker Cup International Golf Matches, Sept 1-2 1932”.  Also on the back is the engraving, “Jess W. Sweetser”.

The 1932 Walker Cup Match was the first time Francis Ouimet captained the United States team.  The U.S. came out on top, beating the Great Britain & Ireland team by a tally of 9 ½ - 2 ½.  The matches themselves were not incredibly exciting, however there was a notable moment provided by English Amateur Leonard Crawley.  On the 18th Hole of his match, Crawley hit a wayward 4-iron that struck the Walker Cup Trophy on the fly, denting the cup.  There was no penalty, and Crawley would go on to win his close match.  The Walker Cup Trophy would not fare so well however, as it remained dented for 12 years until it was finally rehabilitated.
