Original 1899 Colored Pen & Ink Drawing
"Moonlight Match" by F.G. Bond

Golf has made for wonderful subject matter for hundreds of years. But in all that time, few artists have ever covered the game being played at night in the moonlight! Signed and dated 1899 by British illustrator F.G. Bond. Better known for his oil paintings of the Suffolk area of England, he worked out of Ipswich and if you look carefully, the tee box on the first hole has the letters ‘IGC’ for Ipswich Golf Club. According the Club website: “Golf has been played at Purdis Heath since 1926 although Ipswich Golf Club itself was founded 31 years earlier in 1895. Originally located at nearby Rushmere Heath, the club moved to its present site to enjoy the delights of the Purdis Heath...” The club themselves have no recollection of the ‘Mooonlight Match depicted in the painting other than saying, “Our founding members were a rowdy lot at times and would bet on anything including night time matches...” This is a rare original colored pen & ink golf drawing dating to 1899. This original drawing is titled "Moonlight Match" and was done by F.G. Bond. It measures 10" x 14". Drawing is on heavy card stock.
