Circa 1840s Douglas McEwan Long Nose Spoon
A Rare and Fine short spoon, circa 1840, by Douglas McEwan (1809-1886) of
Musselburgh. This delicate and elegant short spoon is a fine example of a feather ball era club by one of the finest clubmakers of the mid 1800s. Though the McEwan name is now synonymous with quality, Douglas McEwan made very few golf clubs in comparison to his chief rival Hugh Philp of St Andrew.
This spoon is made of applewood, and demonstrates the art of its craftsman. Carefully and artfully repaired, this club must've been the pride of its owner. The flat lie is true to the period, with a long sweeping bend.
True Douglas McEwans, as well as clubs truly from the feather ball era, are rare. Offered here is a fine example of a cornerstone piece for any early club collection - an authentic McEwan from the feather ball era.
