The "Postage Stamp" at Royal Troon is one of the most famous golf holes on the planet. Never was that more obvious than a few weeks ago at the 2016 Open Championship. During the Open, NBC placed a record number of cameras on a single golf hole, including inside every single one of the Postage Stamp's bunkers.
Offered here is Arthur Weaver's actual “first impression” sketch of the Postage Stamp at Royal Troon. Arthur Weaver (1918-2008), who is perhaps the most famous modern golf artist, did not paint from viewing a photograph. Instead, he actually went out, picked his spot on the golf course, and literally sat there and created a "first impression" sketch. He would use this rough sketch as the template for his later painting and/or prints of the subject.
This first impression sketch of the Postage Stamp was never sold by Weaver. He used it to create a painting, but like almost all original sketches, this remained in his archives until his death. This painting was acquired from Arthur Weaver's widow, and has never been publicly offered for sale. Framed to an overall size of 13"X11.5". Image is 5.5X7.5".
