For many golf fans in the mid 1950s, the 1954 US Amateur was the first time they heard the name Arnold Palmer. It would not be the last time. Arnold Palmer went on to win the 54 Amateur. After that tournament, Palmer quit the job he had selling paint and turned professional. He would go on to transcend the game on an off the course.
