Willie Davis (1863-1902) was the first professional and clubmaker in North America when he was hired by Royal Montreal as a teenager. His employment at Royal Montreal would be short lived, however, as he was fired within a year. It seemed Davis excelled as a clubmaker, but the membership was not happy with his greenskeeping abilities. His employers were either wrong, as Willie Davis greatly improved, as a decade later he designed Shinnecock Hills Golf Club in New York, - one of the world's greatest courses.

This club is in exceptional condition, and is marked W.F. Davis, Newport, RI. Therefore, we can definitely date this club to Davis' time as head professional at Newport from 1893 to 1899. This 1890s long nose club has a rare deep curved face. The original shaft is also beautifully stamped, as shown in the photos.
