The 1953 Masters is one of the most important golf tournaments in history. Ben Hogan was a Hall of Fame golfer before 1953, but his magical 1953 season vaulted him to an all-time great. That began in Augusta when Hogan shattered the tournament record by posting a -14 score that was 5 strokes clear of the field. 

At this historic tournament, the two greatest amateurs of their day, Frank Stranahan and Harvie Ward, battled for the title of Low Amateur at the Masters Tournament. Though it has now become a significant achievement, the Low Amateur trophy was first awarded in 1952 - just a year prior to this 1953 Masters. At the end of the tournament, Stranahan and Ward were tied - a rare phenomenon that has only happened one time since. Frank Stranahan was one of the greatest amateur golfers in Masters Tournament history. While no amateur has ever won the Masters Tournament, Stranahan nearly did just that when he finished 2nd in 1947.
