The Musselburgh golf ball was produced by J&D Clark in the late 1890s. It was among the most expensive golf balls in the world, but it was also highly popular. Among other achievements, the Musselburgh ball was used by Harry Vardon to win the 1898 Open Championship. Harry Vardon also stated “I can say that I never used a better [ball], as it flies well, putts well, and above all, it is always good gutta.” These words from the great Vardon obviously came before he endorsed the Vardon Flyer a short time later.

The Musselburgh's reign abruptly ended when the rubber core Haskell shook up the entire industry.

The offered Musselburgh gutty ball is in Mint condition. This 115+ year old ball retains 99.9% of its original paint. Surely one of the finest examples in the hobby.

Back in 2004, Antique Golf Collectibles by Chuck Furjanic listed a grade 9 of 10 Musselburgh gutta percha ball at $2,750 in its price guide.
