Offered here is the actual runner-up medal from the 1928 US Amateur, which for the first time featured the reigning US Amateur and British Amateur Champions against each other in the final - Bobby Jones and Philip Perkins. Bobby Jones made his way with Perkins quite easily, winning the match, 10&9. It was Bobby Jones' 8th Major Championship victory.
Quite spectacularly, this runner-up medal is not only engraved with Perkins' name, but also with the name of the famous man who beat him - Robert T. Jones, Jr. It has been speculated that possibly Perkins himself had Jones' name added as an ode to the legendary golfer who bested him in 1928, though we have no evidence of that assumption.
This medal remained in the Perkins family until very recently, when our consignor obtained it from Perkins' grandson. This sterling silver 1928 USGA US Amateur runner-up medal measures 1 3/4".
