On February 14, 1949, a press release from Augusta National Golf Club shook the golf world: Bobby Jones would not compete in the Masters Tournament. Jones had come out of retirement in 1934 to compete in the inaugural Masters Tournament, and he competed every single year through 1948. In 1949 his health prevented him from playing for the first time. Though this press release from Clifford Roberts makes it clear that Bobby Jones was expected to make a full recovery, the truth is that Bobby Jones would never play competitive golf again.
This original press release contains a stamp facsimile signature of Clifford Roberts. Included in this lot is a booklet Records of the Masters 1934-1948. This booklet was given to members of the press for the 1949 Masters Tournament. The 1949 Masters Tournament may not have included Bobby Jones, but it would become one of the most famous ever, as the winner Sam Snead was awarded a Green Jacket - the first time it was awarded.
