Though virtually impossible to photograph, Stanhopes are something you just have to see to believe. Before "viewers" and similar entertainment devices became popular in the 1900s, a French company produced these tiny Stanhopes that, when looked through like a small telescope, showed a photograph.
In the case of the offered Stanhopes, the images inside are those of the great Old Tom Morris. It's really like a time capsule of viewing 19th century Tom Morris photographs in their original form.
We’ve done our best to shoot photographs through the openings of these tiny telescope Stanhopes with a digital microscope, but like we said, these really have to be handled in person to fully appreciate their significance. We’ve encountered one or two of these late 1800s Stanhopes before, but this is an incredible find of 6 Old Tom Morris Stanhopes.
