Offered here is a rare autographed letter from J. E. Laidlay. Johnny Laidlay won the 1889 and 1891 British Amateurs, but is best known today for inventing the overlap grip, which is used by over 95% of golfers in the world. The grip is often incorrectly called the Vardon grip, though Vardon himself credited his use of it to Laidlay.

This letter comes from the now-defunct Golfing magazine in London. The editor of Golfing magazine wrote to Laidlay in 1907 and asked him to provide a list of golf clubs necessary to form a "complete outfit." Laidlay wrote his notes on the bottom of that Golfing magazine letter, signed it, and returned it to the editor.

Letter of Provenance and Authenticity from noted historian and collector Mark Emerson.
