John McDermott is one of the most important - and tragic - figures in golf history. Forget what you know about Francis Ouimet, as John McDermott was the first true American golf star. McDermott won the US Open at the age of 19 in 1911, and defended his title the following year at the age of 20. But McDermott's story is seldom told, largely due to the fact that mental illness derailed his life (and golf career) beginning in 1914. Starting at the age of 24, McDermott spent the rest of his life in mental hospitals, group homes, or living in the care of relatives. He would never play competitive golf again.

Offered here is a rare club that McDermott produced in his early 20s while the professional at Atlantic City Country Club. The club has a bold McDermott stamp, as well as the word "Champion" stamped below. 38 1/4".
