This is a scarce autographed photo of 1902 Open Champion Sandy Herd. Though modern golf fans may not know Herd's name as much as other golfers of his era like Vardon, Braid, and Taylor, he was very much their equal on the golf course. We now often simply look at Major Championship victories to determine greatness, and Herd has but one Open Championship victory on his resume. But Herd was one of the golf's great players for a long period of time. He finished top 10 in the Open Championship an astounding 20 times, including a runner-up place finish at the age of 52 and a top 10 when he was 59 years old.
Great action photograph of Herd with a bold "Alex Herd" signature and the notation "1933." 8" x 6", crease down the center. Original 1933 wire slug on reverse - the same year Herd hand-dated this photograph with his signature.
