The Honorable Gilbert Legh received his UK patent for the weighted sole putter in 1910. (The Clubmaker's Art, p. 314). More than just a sole plate, it's really a head weight. Whereas a traditional sole plate is simly trying to add weight and protect the bottom of a club, Legh's weight was designed to make the weight of the club in line with the shaft. This original circa 1910 Legh's Patent putter is in very good condition, and has the name and patent date on the sole plate.
