Offered here is one of the Crown Jewels of the classic golf club market - a rare circa 1959 Ping Karsten Redwood City "A5" putter. The legend has been retold countless times - in his spare time, Karsten Solheim began making putters in his garage in Redwood City, California in 1959. Then in 1960, Karsten moved to Scottsdale, Arizona and focused his attention on being a clubmaker. Soon thereafter, the PING golf company was born.
The "A5" mallet putter was sold in minuscule quantities. According to the book And The Putter Went PING..., there were 427 known orders for the Redwood City 1A putter in 1959, but only a single order for an A5 putter. The total number of Redwood City A5 putters produced by Karsten is his garage is not known, but this is one of the scarce surviving examples. Very good condition with original green Golf Pride "Informer" grip.
