Offered here is a circa 1906 Patent (Applied For) "Waters Spring Neck" brassie by Percy Hills. Bulger head wood with lined face markings. Contains a vulcanite insert to leading edge of sole, and fitted with a patent spring neck. According to The Clubmaker's Art, Waters' objective was to produce a club that would drive the ball a greater distance by designing a neck with "spring action," while keeping the shaft rigid. The Clubmaker's Art further states that this "is one of two known." Excellent overall condition.
This club originates from the famed Jeff Ellis Collection, and this exact club was featured in his books The Clubmaker's Art (TCA 1, p. 142; TCA 2, p. 165). This club has not reached the collector market since its sale at the 2007 Sotheby's auction of the Jeff Ellis Collection.
