Offered here is a circa 1890s Army & Navy Three-Piece fork splice bulger head brassie. According to The Clubmaker's Art, the design of this club was believed to alter the whip of the shaft in the swing. Players thought such a design would add a "kick" on impact and result in a longer drive. Overall good condition, the head has a hairline crack, and areas of the original whipping are absent, and the sheepskin grip is in poor condition.
This club originates from the famed Jeff Ellis Collection, and this exact club was featured in his books The Clubmaker's Art (TCA 1, p. 140; TCA 2, p. 162). This club has not reached the collector market since its sale at the 2007 Sotheby's auction of the Jeff Ellis Collection.
