Originally referred to as the "Chantilly Putter" after Chantilly, France, the home of its inventor. The Chantilly putter, however, rapidly became known as the Gassiat putter. Jean Gassiat was a popular French golf professional who famously defeated Harry Vardon by a stroke to win the 1912 French Open. According to The Clubmaker's Art, though the shape of this putter often leads people to refer to it as a "croquet style" putter, croquet style golf strokes were effectively outlawed by a 1910 R&A ruling, so it is doubtful that this club would've ever been used croquet style during sanctioned play.

Very good condition with original pistol grip. Circa 1913-1920.
