Offered here is a circa 1890s Willie Park Jr. "Compressed" patent bulger head driver. The crown of this driver is stamped "W. Park's Patent'd Compressed." According to The Clubmaker's Art, the July 21, 1893 issue of Golf reads "Willie Park has brought out a new head, which he calls 'compressed wood,' a material we do not understand."
This club originates from the famed Jeff Ellis Collection, and this exact club was featured in his books The Clubmaker's Art (TCA 1, p. 298; TCA 2, p. 360). This club has not reached the collector market since its sale at the 2007 Sotheby's auction of the Jeff Ellis Collection.
