After we shattered the golf industry record by selling the Tiger Slam irons for over $5 million last year, we reached out to Tiger's former coach Hank Haney begging for something, anything related to Tiger. Tiger Woods is infamously tight with his items and his inner circle, so even Haney commented that he didn't have much. After a little more pressing, Haney admitted he had "maybe a couple wedges."
Hank Haney did send us one wedge ($39,816 in our Summer 2022 Auction), but that was over a year ago. For this special Premier Auction, we again reached out to Haney. You said you had a couple wedges, right?
Well here it is. This is Tiger Woods' personal custom Nike wedge, stamped "TW" and "56," and a completely blank sole.
Accompanying Tiger's wedge is an extraordinary handwritten letter from Hank Haney on his own note card. Haney writes that he received this wedge from Tiger when they were in Tiger's garage at his home at Isleworth Country Club. He also states that the wedge was hand ground by Mike Taylor at Nike. Haney further states that Tiger gave him this club so that Haney could practice with it to better understand the grind of the wedge - particularly how it interacted with the ground.
This wedge still contains a sticker that says "TW - Test Wedges 9/18/03".
What a club! Not only is it Tiger's personal wedge, but it was also actively used by Hank Haney while he helped guide Tiger to his success (6 of his Major Championships came during their professional relationship).
