Tom Stewart of St Andrews is one of the most famous iron makers in history. He made irons for the likes of Old Tom Morris, and was still making irons decades later for Bobby Jones. When collectors think about Tom Stewart and his iconic pipe cleekmark, they often don't think about rut irons like the offered example. This circa 1890s rut iron was made during the earlier part of Tom Stewart's career. The club has a fairly small head for an 1890s rut iron, and also has a long hosel. It contains Stewart's iconic pipe cleekmark on the reverse of the head. It is also stamped by Albert Tingey of Brancaster, who would've been the original retailer of this iron.
