Tom Stewart FO/RTJ Iron set consisting of 1-9, (9 is the putter). Some with Foreman inspection stamps. The 1 and 9 do not bear the FO/RTJ marks but they are obviously part of the set as the ferrules, hosels, grips, etc are all original and match. 38" 1-iron.

Matching hickory-shafted RTJ and FO/RTJ iron sets are extremely rare. Such steel shaft sets, however, are unheard of in most corners. Offered here is a fabulous complete set 1-iron through 9-iron (9 is the putter). To fully undersand this set, the set of hickory-shafted RTJ irons in this auction provides a detailed background to their unauthorized production. Given the rarity of this steel shaft set, very few had been assembled when Bobby Jones told Tom Stewart that he needed to stop making them. Not only was Jones unaware of what Stewart was doing, replicating the grand-slam-winner's clubs, Jones had signed with Spalding to endorse their clubs.

When Stewart received the request to stop production, he likely simply stopped stamping the heads. Then he combined the heads he had previously stamped with a few that were unstamped and sent them out the door, which would explain why the 1- and 9-iron lack the FO/RTJ initials.

There is wonderful history to this set of clubs. It connects to the great St Andrews cleekmaker Tom Stewart, whose irons Bobby Jones used throughout his career (occasionally supplemented with a few made by other makers as well), as well as Bobby Jones himself.
