This circa 1875 Charlie Hunter play club remains largely as Hunter made it. The original 43" shaft still features its sueded leather grip. The head is entirely original, from its finish to its components, measuring 5 1/2" in length, 1 15/16" in width, and 1 1/8" in face depth. The club appears to have seen little use, with but a small chip and shallow crack on the toe end of the face that are minor in nature, especially given how nice the rest of the club is.

Charlie Hunter, known as the "Grand Old Man of the West," was revered and respected in his time. As a young man, Hunter learned clubmaking while apprenticing for Tom Morris at Prestwick. He then served as the professional at Prestwick for over 50 years, from September 1864—after Tom Morris left for St. Andrews—until mid-1865, and then again from 1868 until his death in 1921. Much like his mentor Old Tom, Hunter enjoyed the deep affection of those who knew him.
