Kolf or Kolven as it is sometimes called was a stick and ball game, kind of a cross between golf and hockey, played in the Netherlands both indoors and outdoors. The object was to hit a specific target, such as a post, or reach a designated area in the fewest strokes possible.  The game was played on ice, in fields, and on courts. The ball, which was large, was meant to roll, not fly.   Kolf had its beginnings back in the 13th or 14th centuries and enjoyed good popularity until the 18th and 19th centuries, when it began to die out.  Today, there are a few kolf groups in the Netherlands that still keep the tradition alive.

The undated kolf club and felt-covered ball offered here is from the World Golf Hall of Fame, with a discreet handwritten inventory number "994" written on the back of its neck. The large brass head has two nails in the neck of the face and one on the rear.  It is marked "H" and (possibly A or T at the neck) and is open on the sole where the wood from the shaft is visible. The ball is felt covered, which is how Kolf balls were often made.

The shaft measures 44" long x 1 1/2 " wide. The bottom half of the shaft has three flat sides and one rounded side. There are two balls that accompany this club.  Both appear to be made out of stitched leather.

This kolf club is the real deal, and is it ever impressive! The ball also looks exceptionally good, though it appears newer than the club.
