Straight from the World Golf Hall of Fame, this Ashford "Skibbie" driver has its original 43 3/4 inch shaft and Bussey sewn leather grip, which is another outstanding creative feature on this club. Both its head and shaft are stamped W.G. Ashford. The club still retains its WGHOF inventory number of 361. This is one of approxiamately a half dozen Skibbies known to the auctioneer.

Charles Ashford received a British patent (No. 21,383) dated November 10,1893, that covered this clubhead made from both wood and metal with a metal neck. The full wrought iron sole is integral with a iron hosel, and a wood block used for the head is screwed to the sole and nailied to the base of the hosel. This club was an early effort to provide a wood head driver with the durability of an iron.

This club is solid in all respects. A great piece! For more info on the Skibbie, see TCA2 v1 p354.
