Located in Prestwick, John Gray was one of the first blacksmiths to mark his name on the irons he made. Once he began to make golf clubs, Gray quickly became regarded as a cleekmaker of the highest caliber, and his work remains sought after today.

From the World Golf Hall of Fame collection on display in St. Augustine Florida, and bearing inventory number "245" discreetly written on the sole, this John Gray cleek has its original 39" shaft and sheepskin grip.  The hosel measures 4 1/2" in length. Nice original condition as shown.

The hand-hammered gutty ball in the images is shown for perspective and is not part of this lot, but is offered separately as its own lot elsewhere in this auction.

For more on John Gray, see The Clubmakers Art 2nd Edition Volume 1 pages 125 and 137. For more on cleeks, see TCA2 V1 p128.
