Born in 1869, Robert Black Wilson learned clubmaking as an apprentice in the St. Andrews shop of Old Tom Morris. He developed a fine golf game and eventually traveled to the United States, where, in 1896, he became the professional at Shinnecock Hills Golf Club, on Long Island, New York.  Spending time and working as a clubmaker in both Great Britain and the United States during the following years, he made many acquaintances and proved himself to be somewhat of a character.

This splice-neck Wilson transition putter shows no use to speak of.  It appears quite striking with a strong black R.B. Wilson stamp on the crown that stands out beautifully against the perfect blonde finish. The 37" shaft is original, and the old leather grip is a replacement from the day. The head measures 4 ¾” in length. There is evidence of past insect damage on the face and neck next to the face (some tiny holes) but in context of the entire club, when compared to all of the other strengths of this transitional putter from the 189os, it’s minor.
