In 1926, the entire country was abuzz that professional Walter Hagen and amateur Bobby Jones had agreed to play a 72 hole exhibition match, billed as “The Match of the Century,” to help promote the sales of Florida real estate. The first 36 holes would be played at Jones' Course, and the second at Hagen’s course – Pasadena Golf and Country Club in St. Petersburg, FL. The winner would receive the $6,800 prize. Of course, since Jones was a 23 year old amateur, he could not accept the money so it was a winning proposition for Hagen.

The match attracted 2,500 spectators, and Walter Hagen trounced Jones 12 and 11. Offered here is an original 100 year old score card from Pasadena Golf and CC that has been scored by a spectator at that historic match. Also included in this lot is an unused color postcard showing the two contestants, spectators, and the clubhouse from that historic match. As show of friendship to his friend, Hagen gifted as set of gold cufflinks to Jones at the match. Some speculate that Hagen's victory helped Jones decide to stay an amateur. At the conclusion of the Match, the USGA informed Bobby Jones that he could never again participate in such a for-profit match without risking his amateur status.
