According to Kevin McGimpsy in his book The Story of the Golf Ball (p.185)  “In 1894, Robert Forgan introduced a new ball called the Agrippa which had a revolutionary cover resembling a blackberry.  Forgan called it the BRAMBLE pattern.”  The bramble pattern went on to replace the mesh pattern that had ruled the world of gutty balls prior to the introduction of the bramble.

This Agrippa 27 1/2 with its circular bramble pattern was made by the Agrippa Golf Ball Company. I“Patent” is marked on the opposite pole marked “Agrippa 27 ½.”  An Agrippa ball marked “Patent” is not listed in any golf ball reference books.  This is a rare version of a rare ball that dates to 1895 or shortly thereafter.  Ball has been used but still retains much of its original paint.
