Offered here is a pre-WWII MacGregor Ironmaster "Charley Penna" putter. The Ironmaster was a fixture on tour for almost 50 years, and are most often seen with Tommy Armour's signature on them. This is an incredibly rare Ironmaster with Charley Penna's signature. Charley was the brother of famed MacGregor designer Toney Penna.
For several decades, if a MacGregor club pro staffer requested, the company would make clubs with the pro's name on them to be sold in their pro shop. Charley was a club pro and this was likely sold to Penna's members. While Bill "Vog" Vogeney is our Scotty Cameron putter expert, he has been collecting classic clubs for 40 years and collecting information on them for 45 years, back to his high school years. "I've seen maybe 2 or 3 of these with Charley's name on them, and maybe 6 or 7 different pros overall including Claude Harmon. I have several of these name variations in my collection."
Has a green shaft-which is a coating MacGregor used on many of their steel shafted clubs after hickory shafts became relics around 1930, with original leather grip. Initials RLB on sole which was likely done at the MacGregor plant for the new owner. It appears the shaft may have been re-pinned but appears to be correct for age of the putter 35.5"
