This 1A no model putter (a 1A without the "1A" stamp) is in clean condition, with a rich, dark patina typical of early PING manganese bronze putters. Free of dents or dings, it retains its timeless appeal. When used to stroke a putt, it still delivers the signature "ping" sound, loud and clear! Upon close inspection, there is a slight bow to the right-hand face, giving it a slightly concave appearance. While not immediately noticeable, this minor factor is worth noting.
Ping Redwood City 1A No Model putters were made before the RC 1A-stamped versions. This example retains its original 34 1/2" shaft and white Informer grip. The "8" stamped on the sole is Karsten Solheim's weight designation.
This historic putter was handmade by Karsten Solheim with the assistance of his teenage sons, Allan and John, in their Redwood City, California, garage. These early Redwood City Ping putters have become iconic, representing the beginning of Solheim's revolutionary impact on golf club design. The 1A was one of his earliest creations, and it introduced the groundbreaking concept of heel-toe weighting, forever changing the way golf clubs were designed and manufactured.
For more about the story of this iconic putter and the other Redwood City models, see And the Putter Went Ping. The second chapter (pages 26–53) explores in detail the creative genius behind the 1A, its development, and its pivotal role in golf history. This putter is a rare and early piece of that legacy.
